Therapy Dogs provide emotional support in hospitals, schools, hospices, nursing homes, and similar environments, bringing joy with their presence.
A therapy dog benefits from a solid foundation in basic obedience, good manners, and social skills, is gentle, and is at ease around new people and situations.
Essential qualities include a steady, consistent temperament, reliability and connectivity amid distractions, and a gentle, loving nature. Core training skills for a therapy dog include excellent manners and life skills such as sit, down, stay, come when called, and leash manners. Greeting skills with people, such as not jumping on people, mouthing, or growling. Well-groomed, clean, and in healthy body condition.
Comfortable with all ages, handling from strangers, recovering from loud noises and dropped items, and comfortable with equipment such as wheelchairs and crutches.
Schedule a one-hour in-home private training behavior assessment, answering any questions about the certification program and your dog's suitability for the course.
Complete the application form, sign the code of conduct, ethics, and policy documents.
Provide proof of vaccination and a health certificate from your Veterinarian. A criminal background record check. Liability insurance. Standard first aid and CPR courses for both dogs and humans (optional but highly recommended).
Complete the online canine education modules, reading, and videos. and an in-person 10 group dog training class program covering all the training required for a well-trained therapy dog.
Complete the final exam with a passing grade. The exam is open book, information acquired from the step four canine education, observation, and in-person hands-on training.
Certificate of course completion, valid for one year. Yearly certification testing is required.
The therapy dog training program consists of: 1. One in-home private training session of one hour in length. 2. Ten group dog training classes. 3. Three canine education modules 4. Final testing. 5. Certificate of completion 6. Therapy dog ID card 7. Graduation gift.
The cost of the training program is $500.00 plus GST, for a total of $525.00! Offering this course at $350.00 plus GST = $367.50 for a limited time!
Classes are held outdoors at St Vital Park with lots of distractions, and St Norbert Community Centre. The course is available to start at the end of April 2026! Next classes are in July, and again in September.
Course completion must be accomplished within three months, including the final exam. The course has a firm start and finish date
A certificate of course completion will be provided, a therapy dog ID card, and a graduation gift for you and your dog!
As soon as you pass the final assessment, your certificate and ID card should arrive in about 30 days.
Each class session will have 4 to 6 participants.
